Eleanor Roosevelt

Eleanor Roosevelt, 1884-1962.  First Lady, 1933-1945.  Typed Letter Signed, Eleanor Roosevelt, as First Lady, one page, 6" x 9", on stationery of The White House, Washington, November 6, 1936.  With original envelope.

Three days after President Franklin D. Roosevelt's landslide reelection in 1936, Eleanor thanks a correspondent for supporting FDR. In full:  "Many thanks for your kind letter.  The President and I deeply appreciate your congratulations and good wishes and are very grateful for your loyal support.  It is very heartening indeed for the President to receive such an overwhelming vote of confidence.”

The letter is in near-mint condition.  It has only two normal mailing folds, neither of which affects the signature, and a pinhead-size stain on the upper right edge of the paper.  Eleanor has signed in blue fountain pen.  The envelope is in fine condition overall, with tears where it was opened at the top and soiling.

The letter is richly double matted in burgundy suede, with an inlaid gilt beaded fillet, and framed in a gilt beaded frame along with a contemporary portrait of Eleanor and an engraved brass identification plate.
